ABOUT THE PROJECT
Pot Dogs is a project delivered by 104 projects CIC about the history of disabled workers in the potteries, funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund. A group of disabled people from Stoke on Trent researched, devised and produced the work you will see here, facilitated by heritage and industry professionals. Please explore our documentary about the project and oral histories featuring disabled people talking about their experiences working for the Staffordshire Potteries throughout the years. The project is also commemorated with a permanent city centre information panel about the disabled workers in Hanley town centre
HISTORY
The idea for Pot Dogs grew out of research about disabled workers who often worked on the production line for Staffordshire pottery dogs. There is a long history of disabled people being employed in the potteries. In the 19th century, Stoke potteries was a hive of industry and there was a shortage of labour. As a result women, children and disabled people were brought into work on the production lines in order to meet demand
THE DOCUMENTARY
This short documentary film was created by the group and consists of interviews and archive footage about the potteries disabled workers.
